NVLPC is the professional organization for all people in or training to join the counseling profession in Northern Virginia.

Our members consist of LPC's, counseling residents, counseling students, and others who work as mental health professionals in Virginia, Washington D.C., and Maryland.

Our regular breakfast programs each month offer LPC's an easy way to earn CE's, and give all our members time to meet and greet their professional and student peers, and learn something interesting. We also have support for those who are working their way toward licensing.  You have questions, NVLPC Resident Support Groups have answers.

As a counseling student, we were all advised to join a professional association for our own benefit, and for the benefit of our profession.  NVLPC is where you belong.

Message from the NVLPC President
Letter from the Leadership

June 5, 2017

Hello NVLPC members,

Great news from our parent organization, AMHCA, regarding their groundbreaking collaborative efforts with three other major professional counseling organizations to reach consensus on a proposal for a uniform portability plan called the “The National Counselor Licensure Endorsement Process.”  The four organizations – the American Association of State Counseling Boards (AASCB), the Association of Counselor Education and Supervision (ACES), the American Mental Health Counselors Association (AMHCA), and the National Board for Certified Counselors (NBCC) –believe that a uniform licensure endorsement process will:

- Significantly increase public access to qualified care.

- Establish minimum standards for safe practice.

- Reduce administrative burdens for state regulatory boards and licensees.

- Create consistency in licensure standards across state lines.

- Ensure protection of the public and the continued development of the profession.

An overarching goal of the initiative is to move the counseling profession toward unified education standards, exam requirements and years of post-graduate experience. To see the National Counselor Licensure Endorsement Process, please go to

As always, if you have any questions, comments, or concerns, please feel free to contact me or any one of our board members.

Hello NVLPC members,

We are so fortunate to have Joel Miller, the Executive Director and CEO of the American Mental Health Counselors Association (AMHCA), presenting at our upcoming CE Breakfast Event on May 26th, “AMHCA Leadership Training and National Issues.”  As our ‘parent’ association on the national level, AMHCA is our direct link to the politics and legislation that effects our profession.  Please join us for this very informative opportunity to hear about how the issues at the federal level do and will impact our work more locally and on the front lines of counseling our clients.  Mr. Miller will discuss recent events at the federal level impacting professional practice including effects of the change in administrations and challenges with Medicare recognition and recommendations on how to support these efforts.

We are doubly fortunate that AMHCA, the premier organization for licensed clinical mental health counselors, is holding their 2017 Annual Conference in Washington, DC, this summer from July 27-29.   This conference, entitled, “Innovate and Advocate: Pathways to Clinical Excellenceis a high impact opportunity for you to improve the services you offer to clients whether you are in private practice or work in community agencies, integrated delivery systems, hospitals, employee assistance programs, substance abuse treatment centers and private practices.  Please visit AMHCA’s website,, to register for this exciting conference.

Our last CE Breakfast Event will be on June 9th, featuring Rachel Virk, a divorce law attorney, who will discuss “Working with Families of Divorce.”  Whether a divorce is litigated or mediated, Ms. Virk will set forth meaningful ways mental health professionals can be involved with their clients being impacted by divorce effectively.

Please join us for one or both of our last two CE Breakfast Events as well as the AMHCA 2017 Annual Conference right here in our backyard.

As always, if you have any questions, comments, or concerns, please feel free to contact me or any one of our board members.  Or, better yet, become a member of leadership next year.

Hello NVLPC members,

I am so glad that you are visiting our website.  Please check out our upcoming CE Breakfast Programs scheduled through May of 2017.  Remember to register early to take advantage of our discounted pricing options.

Did you know that research shows keeping a gratitude journal can create measurable differences in self-reported happiness?  According to University of California psychologist Sonja Lyubomirsky, counting one’s blessings reliably increases positive mood because it helps us extract enjoyment from any situation.  Put another way, gratitude reminds our limbic brain that we are, in fact, adequate, and complete just as we are.  When the limbic brain feels inadequate, it often tries to “fill up” which often takes the form of addictions and impulsivity.  Remembering the fullness of gratitude can limit those feelings of inadequacy.

As always, please don’t hesitate to contact me at or any one of our Board members if you have any comments, questions, or concerns.  We would love to hear from you.
