Because of his experience using biomarkers with patients, Michael Anderson, M.D., sees that psychopharmacology no longer correlates in a linear fashion to diagnostic categories. Diagnosis is now understood in broad-based spectrums. Therefore, this requires the clinician to look for symptom clusters and to think beyond traditional diagnostic classifications. Looking for alternative explanations for symptoms is especially important for patients who have not responded to multiple medication trials.

GOALS FOR THIS PRESENTATION:

• To discuss the spectrum disorder concept for common mental disorders.

• To review some key, but uncommonly mentioned, symptoms for those disorders.

• To identify potential pitfalls of medications.

• To introduce the concept of biomarkers and personalized medicines.

Michael Anderson, M.D., maintains a general psychiatry practice in McLean, Virginia. Over the last eight years, he has developed a special interest and expertise in the use of EEG biomarkers and their use for prescribing psychiatric medications. This technology is currently being studied at Walter Reed Hospital as well as other military medical centers for use in the treatment of PTSD.

As part of our networking opportunities, we invite all members to bring their marketing materials to display, and/or to introduce themselves during our 2-minute introductions. Please let us know that you are interested when you RSVP.
