Ambiguous loss and disenfranchised grief may be significantly different from other experiences of grief. Society in general and even therapists often do not address some losses with the understanding that the client may be grieving. Stillbirth, miscarriage and abortion all involve the ending of a pregnancy and often fit into the categories of ambiguous loss and/or disenfranchised grief. Due to the nature of the loss and the lack of attention by society, a client may not bring this issue into therapy; yet it may have a significant impact on her well-being. This presentation will focus on the concepts of disenfranchised grief and ambiguous loss and how they apply to pregnancy loss. In addition, various therapeutic approaches will be presented.

Dr. Karen J Smith, LPC, LMFT, NCC is in private practice in Arlington, VA and a member of NVLPC for more than 10 years. She is an Associate Professor at Marymount University and several of her former students are active NVLPC members. Among the courses she has taught as an adjunct in the graduate counseling program is Grief and Loss. Dr. Smith has done extensive work in the areas of grief, loss and trauma. She is a trained therapist facilitator for the Rachel’s Vineyard program for post abortion healing. It is through this experience that Dr. Smith experienced the profound grief of pregnancy loss that is sometimes experienced by the client but may be overlooked by the therapist.
