Your Brain on Ink: Journaling and Neuroscience -  1.5 Credit Hours

Presented by Deborah Ross

About the Event:

Journaling/Expressive Writing, is both an ancient art and an evidence based paradigm that can be used across a wide range of healing challenges, to cultivate self-awareness and lean into a self-authored future.    Utilizing the newer findings from neuroscience research participants will learn how writing is an example of self-directed neuroplasticity and how to utilize that knowledge to guide clients (and themselves) in this highly effective treatment adjunct. Three writing exercises, representing different techniques will be offered.

Learning Objectives:

1)  Understand how the brain's velcro/teflon bias informs writing and hence ruminating and how to navigate through that bias.

2)  Learn how to do a Reflection Write - the write after your write - how that puts you in relationship with your writing and why that's important.

3)  Introduction to the concept of a Journal Ladder,  how that contributes to structure, pacing and containment with examples of 2 more stable techniques.

4)  Learn why many Gratitude Journals are pale and often abandoned and to use the neuroscience to cue for a robust, sustaining experience that contributes to resilience.
