What are the requirements of the State of Virginia Board of Counseling for providing clinical supervision to residents in counseling?
Effective September, 2010, the State of Virginia Board of Counseling now requires that anyone providing supervision for a resident in professional counseling must document 2 years of post-licensure clinical experience. They must obtain professional training in supervision, consisting of three credit hours in graduate-level coursework in supervision or at least 20 hours of continuing education in supervision offered by a provider approved under 18VAC115-20-106.
Listed below are several opportunities to get the required 20 hours of continuing education in supervision.
Please be advised that NVLPC does not endorse any of these opportunities, but is only providing the information as follows:
- Virginia Association of Clinical Counselors (VACC) offers supervision training workshops. Check out their website, VACC.org.
- The American Counseling Asssociation (ACA) offers online Contact Hours (up to 7) on their website, Counseling.org.
