About the Event:

Religious beliefs and spiritual practices have long been recognized as distinct components of cultural identity and personal wellness; however, professional counselors may feel ill-prepared to include these issues as part of their case conceptualizations or treatment plans. This training will present different screening and assessment tools that support Association for Spiritual, Ethical, and Religious Values in Counseling (ASERVIC) competencies for addressing spiritual and religious issues in counseling. Familiarization with these screening and assessment tools will increase counselors’ multicultural competence, which may increase client satisfaction through an enhanced therapeutic alliance.

About the Presenter:

Hello, my name is Matthew Stevens, and I am a Licensed Professional Counselor in the Commonwealth of Virginia. My counselor identity is complemented by more than 20 years of service as a Navy chaplain. My military service has included approximately 10 years in Navy Medicine, where I have worked on various initiatives to optimize the interdisciplinary relationships between chaplaincy and mental health departments at medical treatment facilities and between the DoD and VA. Through the appropriate weaving together of my theological formation with my and counselor identity, I easily connect with military families and am skilled with integrating personal belief systems into my plans of care. My educational background includes an MDiv (theological vocations) from Emory University and an MA (professional counseling) from Liberty University. I am currently completing a doctoral program (PhD) in Counselor Education and Supervision through Walden University.
